Coldplay at the Emirates

Nielsen, I’m going to kill you!” was the first sentence uttered as me and my friend, Christine, stared for the first time at Arsenal FC’s Emirates Stadium. I don’t blame her. Around the stadium, roughly 300 people were queuing out of a possible 60,000+ people at 12pm. The initial plan was the queue at that 10am. If we did follow that initial plan, Christine would have queued up with the tumbleweed and my mangled corpse.

But if anything were to die on concert day (Friday 1 June) it would be my feet and larynx from all the jumping, (bad) singing and the sheer excitement of being inches from the front. Quite few acts have the songs to construct a stadium gig and keep up with its demands. Clocks, Yellow, In My Place, Charlie Brown, Paradise, Viva La Vida, The Scientist, Violet Hill, Fix You – when you’ve got songs like these, you’ve guaranteed yourself a roaring response. The new songs, too, managed to blend naturally with Coldplay’s warhorses. Unsurprising as Mylo Xyloto sounds like a more layered and polished version of 2008′s Viva La Vida and Death and All His Friends.

And then there’s the four men. Will Champion, Guy Berryman, Johnny Buckland and Chris Martin – all four friends solid and energetic as their frontman. Martin engaged, jumped, crooned, swore, sweated (a lot), danced, pranced and skipped like a child let loose in a toy store and we, the crowd, ate it up.

It would be foolish for any Coldplay fan who hasn’t caught them on the road to miss out on their live performances!

COLDPLAY SNAPS ON TUMBLR

Oh and of course I took snaps of the concert. You think I only took the two on this blog post? I took around 100+ snaps but like most shots taken by  amateur photographers, most of them were a blur and just a fraction was suitable for publishing. Yeah, need to upgrade my 5MP Kodak cam/ iPhone 4.

Peruse, like it, reblog it, tweet or just kindly nod and imagine you were there or something. Enjoy them!

Originally seen on kingsroad.co.uk - posted on 30 May. Rachael Grace.

Just over a year ago, Prince William and the Catherine “Kate” Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, married and awarded the nation with a four day weekend. And now our precious Queen has ordered her minions to have an extra 2 days off along with a royal tea pardy on the King’s Road.

Oh how we Brits love our royals….and bank holidays.

Thanks, Ma’am!

Here’s an excerpt:

Modelled on the garden parties hosted by the Royal Family each year and in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Duke of York Square will be hosting London’s biggest luxury tea party on Sunday 3 June.

Snaps of Chelsea FC Victory Parade

Nothing is more depressing than a Gooner who can’t swim drown in yesterday’s blue sea that flooded King’s Road and Fulham Road. Still, it could be worse. You could be a Spurs fan.

That aside, snaps of yesterday’s Chelsea FC parade celebrating their FA Cup and Champions League victories are now up on Kingroad.co.uk’s Facebook page.

Congrats to Blues!

Originally seen on kingsroad.co.uk - posted on 4 May. Unknown writer.

Despite strong opposition from their fans, Chelsea FC has finally made a bid for the iconic Battersea Power Station site. However, it is reported that there are other bidders for the landmark.

Contrary to popular belief, Chelsea FC is located near the border of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, instead sitting on the Hammersmith and Fulham side of Fulham Road.

Here’s an excerpt:

Chelsea Football Club can confirm to our fans that we have today submitted an offer, with our property development partner Almacantar, to acquire the 39-acre Battersea Power Station site.

Review: Made In Chelsea series 3 episode 3

Originally seen on kingsroad.co.uk - posted on 19 April. Written by Rachael Grace.

To put simply, this week’s Made In Chelsea episode was all about the two horse race between sneaky Spencer and loveable pardy boy Jamie and the winner of this race wins the heart of Louise. Having lost Ms Caggie Dunlop more times than Proudlock’s visits to church, Spencer is not having another loss to his name and resorts to trickery that would make minxy Millie proud.

At least they’ve stopped worshipping church gal Kimberly. She was all over the boys last week, wasn’t she?

Nothing but sympathy for that poor canine in Cheska’s hands as its owner bickered – albeit awkwardly in typical Chelsea style – with Gabriella over some blonde fella (no idea about the name. Wasn’t paying attention). Drama is never too far away when you stick the pair in a room.

Speaking of Gabs, whilst she was having her dinner with the blonde, I can’t help but notice one thing:

You sly man.

Anywho, enough from me, handing over the Chelsea thrills and charms to Rachael.

Here’s an excerpt:

As they say in the Royal Borough, “Quam Bonum in Unum Habitare” – how good is it to dwell in unity, or not in this case. Made in Chelsea is becoming as predictable as Britney’s come-back hits. With more stops and starts than the Circle Line on Sundays, the boys and girls of Chelsea pouted their way through yet another mediocre episode this week.

Documentary Season at Gate Cinema, Notting Hill

In case you didn’t hear, Gate Cinema hit the ripe age of 101 last week so happy birthday to them. Here’s hoping for another successful 101 years!

Greetings aside, April has been quite a busy – and wet – month with the Easter holidays arriving early. So what does May have in store for Gate Cinema? Probing questions, sneak-peaks behind the scenes, peering into history and, of course, an depth look at the lives of extraordinary people – yup, Gate Cinema will be screening a fantastic variety of documentaries to unravel the mysteries and worlds of, well, see for yourself!

Revenge of the Electric Car

A quick look at the title and you might mistake it for a parody of the Transformers movies (terrible franchise by the way). Thankfully it’s not. This documentary takes a look at the companies that killed off their brand of electric cars. But now, in 2012, their cars have come back fighting. Here we look at their latest line of electric cars to take to the roads, ready to race into the hearts of motorists after years of stuttering starts in the industry.

Director Chris Paine says: “Tesla CEO Elon Musk puts his personal fortune on the line. Bob Lutz, GM’s Vice Chair, stakes the entire brand on the very technology it once tried to kill. Nissan’s CEO, Carlos Ghosn, bets the farm on a car almost no one believes can happen. And my neighbor, Greg ‘Gadget’ Abbott, like thousands of other car converters around the world, sets out to prove you can do it yourself. The challenges they face are as tough as capitalism can be cagey.

“But the prize if they succeed is really for all of us: the reinvention of the car without gasoline, and potentially without fossil fuel at all.”

For three years, cameras follow the lives of aspiring runners all hoping to get a chance to get on the world stage and achieve the same success as their heroes.

Being Elmo

‘Elmo would like to know, who plays Elmo?!’ It’s a question that has been circling in my head since I was a little kid.

Oh hello, documentary that answers that very question! This docu is a great follow up for those who were tickled and chortled at the latest Muppets movie shown at Gate Cinema. Being Elmo follows Kevin Clash, otherwise known as the man behind Sesame Street’s favourite red muppet, Elmo. Ever since he was a teenager, Clash aspired to be a puppeteer and his dreams finally came true after joining Jim Henson’s and his legendary team.

This heart warming story won the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011.

Review: Made In Chelsea series 3 episode 2

Originally seen on kingsroad.co.uk - posted on 5 April. Written by Rachael Grace.

It wasn’t as barking mad as last week’s episode but more sense is quite right. And with that, we were rewarded with a far more lively episode 2.

The reason for the shift in gear? It has to be the show stealing shenanigans of Jamie, Mark Francis and diamond lord Francis. I mean seriously, only those three can come up with classic TV lines such as this.

Nice to see Made In Chelsea back on top form.

Here’s an excerpt:

Made in Chelsea upped its game this week in the form of wardrobe foray’s at Glamour Magazine, a lesson in “sweat-working” and a doggie bash with more bitches present than at the Birmingham NEC in March. Yes, Cheska’s bid for a storyline of her own finally materialised this week as she hosted a fundraiser in aid of the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

Bikes, camera, action! Film Tour with Bikeminded

You can follow my day to day cycling activities on my bike blog, beingbikeminded.tumblr.com

Yup, that was my first thought when I was invited to Bikeminded’s Film Tour.  But knowing Bikeminded, I knew they weren’t going to pull a fast one. Instead, they took us cyclists on a revealing journey of film locations in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC).

Starting from the beautiful Albert Bridge (my favourite bridge in London), Jamie, our guide, revealed that the scene where tramps get their revenge on protagonist Alex from the acclaimed A Clockwork Orange was filmed there. For those unaware of the plot, A Clockwork Orange centres around Alex and his gang of friends who cause chaos in the city through their hunger for violence. A must see film, if you haven’t seen it.

Weaving through the backstreets of SW3 and King’s Road, we arrived at another local fav of mine, Brompton Cemetery. The latest Sherlock Holmes and Johnny English are just a few films that were recorded here. The latter wasn’t mentioned on the tour but I found this particular scene quite amusing:

Jamie also informed us that the many characters from Peter Rabbit are named after people who were buried in Brompton Cemetery.

Whilst heading north of RBKC we cycled up Notting Hill. The steep climb was much needed after consuming these little treats (thanks to the person who brought them!). Once the hill was tackled, we bumped into the hordes of tourists. Not particularly a great idea considering it was market day on Portobello Road.

We finished up near Latimer Road and learnt about how the borough isn’t just filled with your Made In Chelsea posh types. The borough is mixed with people from different backgrounds, cultures and countries – symbolised by the film Kidulthood, directed by Ladbroke Grove’s very own Noel Clarke (also known as Doctor Who’s Mickey Smith).

RBKC is a joyous borough to cycle through and oozes in history. It certainly one of the most beautiful areas to cycle through whether or not you tag along with one of the tours.

But if you do want to book for one of the tours, visit their website.

Easter Films at Gate Cinema, Notting Hill

So it’s finally Easter and I’m guessing many of you are procrastinating to escape from exams and assessments, ‘revising’, finished uni like I have or well, procrastinating some more. Nevertheless, it is still a good idea to take a breather from academic or work life and refresh your head.

For me, trips to the cinema is an obvious move. A good ol’ Hollywood blockbuster or mainstream British film can do the job in getting our movie fixes. However, sometimes we need to step back from the bombast and dive into the world of independent films. Gate Cinema is just one of many independent cinemas in London.  Its facade and interior feels as if you stepped back in time to watch a play, offering a refreshing feel to those used to the modern venues (and wallet busting prices) such as Vue and Odeon.

As for the films they’re showing this Easter, they’ve got a variety of genres that’ll attract film goers of all ages:

A Cat In Paris

The French animated  A Cat In Paris follows Dino, a mischievous  cat who leaves his house and owner, Zoé, during the night to help and carry out daring burglaries with a burglar named Nico.  Of course, Zoé begins to notice Dino’s nightly exploits and soon tails her beloved pet to unveil a shocking discovery.

Damsels In Distress

Don’t be fooled by the title. This comedy stars three woman hoping to help students at a local college who are on the brink of suicide and swimming in depression through dance and healthy living. Of course, not everything goes as planned as romances spring that threatens their friendship. As an added bonus, director Whit Stillman will be at Gate Cinema for a Q&A session so it’ll be definitely worth booking for!

This Must the Place

We turn things up to 11 with drama This Must Be the Place,  tells the story of a down-and-out rock star forced to hunt down a Nazi after an unexpected turn of events. Rock ‘n’ roll trainspotters will notice the references embedded in the film and even co-stars Bono’s (U2) daughter, Eve Hewson.
